I think there are three major things to consider when you are in the process of buying new stainless steel flatware. I don't value any of the three higher than the others, but instead recommend you only buy when you find flatware that meets all three criteria. You should approach the purchase with the idea you will be using the flatware for many many years to come, and therefore, don't be in a rush. Wait until you find that “right” set.

The first consideration when buying a new set of silverware is to be very clear on what you expect from your flatware. Are you looking for everyday use, or are you looking for sets that will let whoever sits down to the dinner table know that this is a special occasion? I think what you are looking for will go a long way to deciding the silverware you get. If what you are looking for is “everyday”, then you don't need to worry the designs are “classical”, or as I prefer to phrase it, "boring". Like everything else in life, if something is unchanging, it soon becomes invisible. That is not necessarily a bad thing, as at most meals you are just filling up on food. But on those occasions that you want to let your guests know this is a special dinner, you want to use your best stainless steel flatware, a silverware set that stands out. It is for those times that Ian Wilson Designs Flatware was intended. Our flatware is anything but boring!

But I don't recommend using Ian Wilson Designs every day. Even our flatware will become “invisible” if it is always at the table. Not all days can be special, and not all meals can be special. A beautiful table setting can help set the tone early and make it clear which this is.

One thing I would always recommend when buying silverware is only buy utensils made from 18/10 stainless steel. This is the best grade of stainless steel used for kitchen silverware sets. The higher grade metal will hold a polish much longer, and be much slower to get corrosion stains. You are buying flatware to use for many, many years. Buy flatware made from a material that will last as long. This is true for both special occasion flatware and your everyday sets. You will never regret buying quality!

The third major consideration how goes the flatware feel in your hand? Does it feel natural? Is it comfortable? Is there a heft to it, or does it feel flimsy? How is the balance when you are using it? It has been a real challenge for us to create visually interesting flatware that also answers all the above questions in a positive way. We had to go through a number of iterations for each of our designer flatware sets before we could finally something we both loved to look at, and loved to use.

We appreciate that while you can see how beautiful our flatware is from seeing it on the website, you need to hold it in your hands to see the care we put into the functional aspects of the design. We also wanted to sell our flatware directly to you in order to keep the price reasonable. Our answer to this conflict is our 30 day no risk trial. When you buy our silverware, try it for 30 days. Experience how comfortable and balanced it feels. We are sure you will love it as much as we do. If not, simply box it up and return it to us. We will refund the full purchase price of the flatware. No questions asked!
